Kate & Nigel of The Makery

What’s the story behind The Makery? Owners Kate and Nigel Smith tell us more
“After a year’s planning we opened our first shop in Bath in December 2009. We started by running creative workshops and parties, but quickly expanded into a second shop where we sold crafty paraphernalia. Five years down the line, we now have a large shop in central Bath, from which we host all of our workshops and parties, and have a shop. We have also published a craft book (with the second due to be published in March 2015). We’ve licensed our own range of kits that will be distributed worldwide this year. And we’ve even had a quick appearance on Dragons’ Den!”

Who or what inspired you? Do you have a particular historical element to your business or product or has it been in the family for years?
“It is a family-run business, inspired by years of creativity. I have been sewing/making things for as long as I can remember, and my mother and grandmothers were all very keen crafters.”

Where and how are your products made?
“Our workshops are located in central Bath, behind our big yellow door! It’s a very surprising building…up the rainbow stairs and you’re faced with room after room of pretty fabrics, buttons and inspiring treats.”

What makes your product unique?
“There is no-one else in Bath doing quite what we do, and we have big plans for our future!”
